Fieldwork

Iquitos, Peru
July 2012, December 2012, May 2015

As part of my dissertation research, I have repeatedly conducted fieldwork in Iquitos, Peru. In Iquitos, I participated in the collection of household, clinical, and entomological surveys. Additionally, I interviewed and collaborated with local scientists and healthcare practitioners, and presented my research to fellow fieldworkers. I carried out all of these activities primarily in Spanish.

Throughout my fieldwork experiences, I practiced methods of conducting both quantitative and qualitative research on the ground. I also gained an awareness of the cultural issues involved in vector-borne disease mitigation in both urban and rural areas of the Amazon. I plan to utilize the analytical and foreign language skills I have developed to conduct further household research throughout Latin America.

My first trip to Iquitos was in July of 2012 for the Genetic Engineering and Society Program capstone course. During this trip, we worked with the US Naval Medical Research Unit in Iquitos (NAMRU-6). I then returned to the city independently in December of 2012 and May of 2015 to continue ressearch collaborations with NAMRU-6. Click on the link below for more information about NAMRU-6 and their research on vector-borne disease.
